Major report into future of digital communication urges urgent action

A high-profile report into the future of the UK’s ability to compete in the vital area of creative, digital and information technology has urged the government to take urgent steps to keep the country competitive. The report comes from a Task Force - a group of academics and business leaders – set up to examine the issue and co-chaired by the University of Surrey’s Vice Chancellor Professor Chris Snowden.

Experts in infectious diseases link up with Government to protect public health

Experts in infectious diseases at the University of Surrey have formed a unique partnership with a government veterinary agency to help tackle global animal and public health issues.

The pioneering collaboration brings together scientists from the Microbial Sciences Division of the University and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA), part of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

Admissions tutors “told what they want to hear” in applications

They are supposed to be a key aspect of the university admissions process: a chance for would-be students to say why they want to devote an important part of their life to studying at a particular institution.  But 'personal statements', in which applicants set out their reasons for choosing a university, are often not personal at all, as candidates simply repeat phrases from its website in an attempt to win favour with admissions tutors.

The bare necessities: How much household carbon do we really need?

Responding to climate change doesn’t have to be painful. Researchers in RESOLVE (the Research group on Lifestyles, Values and the Environment) at the University of Surrey have shown that substantial reductions in carbon emissions could be achieved while preserving a decent standard of life.
